Energy and the Environment
The urgent need to convert our primary energy source from fossil fuels to clean alternatives is obvious. But do we have the political will and leadership to follow through, and how much time do we have to make this conversion? My answer is that we best find both the initiative and the leadership and start making bold changes immediately. Or, we can maintain the status quo and suffer the consequences. Unfortunately, the consequences could be as dire as the extinction of the human species.
With an estimated world population which we already cannot sustain reaching 6.7 billion by our November election day, imagine the challenges of 9 billion people on planet Earth by 2050. Energy and population growth must be dealt with for economic, environmental, and humanitarian reasons. We have responsible solutions and the talent to offer us the best choices; what we need is the courage and prudence to change our behavior! America's best days can still lie ahead of us. Many clean energy alternatives are currently available to us such as geothermal, passive and active solar, wind, biological, tidal, Hydrogen, and even safe nuclear power. A Japanese Company plans to be selling photo-cell panels by 2010 for less than $1/kilowatt; there is no acceptable reason why the U.S. cannot be developing the same or better technologies.
Like the miner's canary, biologists report that our planet's biodiversity is being irreversibly destroyed by human activities at an unprecedented rate. We, along with the other nations of our world, have an obligation to re-balance Earth's ecology. Over-population and ignorance are at the root of our problems while education and progressive actions are the solution.
