September Supporter of the Month: Sherry Harbert

We continue to be inspired by all the great supporters and volunteers coming out of the woodwork to help us elect Joel to Congress! Here's what our latest Supporter of the Month, the wonderful Sherry Harbert, has to say about Joel:

"Joel Haugen represents all the basic characteristics of great leadership. He is intelligent, multi-talented, experienced, collaborative and cares about where this nation is heading. When he first told me about his run for office, I saw an opportunity for a local citizen to guide our nation toward a future that represents the best of its people. When he asked if I would be part of his incredible team of supporters, I immediately agreed.

Joel’s five-point plan is just the beginning of a set of policy goals that will create new jobs, protect our environment, open opportunities for direct dialogue and create systems that truly benefit all Americans. U.S. energy policies have continued to create instability in domestic and world markets, the environment and our national security. Joel’s plan for hydrogen-based vehicles and other alternative fuels to provide jobs without taking away vital food sources gives insight into his ideas and views. He thinks about how we all can benefit. His Haugenator, an electric bike equipped with a solar panel for recharging represents his ingenuity and pragmatic approach to issues. It also reveals a bit of fun we need in our lives.

I first met Joel during a luncheon with Zhou Wenzhong, China’s Ambassador to the U.S., at a World Affairs Council of Oregon event last year. I was impressed by his knowledge and understanding of world affairs. The more we discuss issues, the more I see how his ideas and knowledge are so needed in Congress. He will bring about a new wave of U.S. credibility that we have lost during these past seven years.

I appreciate Joel’s thoughtful plan for national service and education reform. As a veteran who is about to watch her son ship out to the U.S. Marine Corps, Joel’s vision for what service represents is both inspiring and comforting. He also is busy thinking about how our government cares for veterans and all our citizens with a comprehensive health care approach.

And, as we watch our nation reach the highest levels of debt with little discourse on what that means for each generation, Joel’s look at replacing out tax system as the mechanism for how we fund services is what we must consider if we truly care about what are children are to face in the years ahead.

I am excited to be a part of Joel’s team. Check out his platform, contact him to ask him questions, and I’m sure you’ll also be excited about what he can bring to Congress."

August Supporter of the Month: Robert A. Steinegger

We love the fact that Joel's campaign is bringing together folks from different backgrounds, communities, ideologies, and parties! In the spirit of celebrating the amazing people lending their support, we bring you our first supporter of the month, Robert A. Steinegger.

Known to his friends as Steiny, he is a "61-going-on-18" year old guitar maker and Air Force Vietnam veteran. Originally from Northern California, he's been in Oregon for a little more than half of his life, and is grateful to have been raised by two very honorable Moderate Republicans.

His father, Emil G. Steinegger, was elected in 1960 as Supervisor for the 5th District of Butte County, California, and Steiny saw firsthand a gentlemanly campaign run by two men who remained good friends long afterward. He also saw firsthand a nasty smear campaign led by extremists against his father in 1964, which was effective enough to cause his father to lose that election. Emil never lost his dignity, though, nor did he ever stoop to their level in his campaign.

Steiny says: "My dad was one of the most honorable people I have ever known, so I know for a fact that some politicians are indeed honorable. I know how to spot one, which is one of the reasons I am glad to support Joel Haugen!"

Steiny, a loyal Democrat, understands the importance of putting the man above the party, and states, "Honor does not have an initial after its name. I have become increasingly disillusioned with the quality (adequate, but certainly not noteworthy) of representation offered by the incumbent Congressman, and did not vote for him the last time, and planned again to write-in one of the other Primary candidates. But I kept hearing about this fellow from Vernonia who was a "Moderate Republican", and since I was raised by one of this now rare breed, I decided to take a closer look. Joel actually took the time to meet with me personally, and I was extremely impressed by his intelligence and motivation, and couldn't find anything in his platform with which I could disagree."

Steiny, who made his own Haugen bumper sticker and can always be spotted wearing his "Haugen for Congress" button, loves telling people about the kind of guy Joel is. "One thing that many might not realize is that Joel is very easy to talk to. He has always spoken to me as an equal, with respect, and never an air of superiority. He even always answers my e-mails! I am quite confident that he will diligently represent all of the citizens of the First District. He is that political "breath of fresh air" that only comes along once in a while, and we would be very fortunate to have him be our voice in Washington. It would be foolish to pass up this opportunity for quality representation just because of one little initial after his name!"

Thank you for all your support, Steiny!
